8 little known ways to tell the future

If you have a really pressing question about the future, you have more options than just asking a magic 8-ball or trying to muddle through a deck of tarot cards. Give one of these methods a try, if you like — just remember that your results may vary and aren't guaranteed.

* Lithomancy. Divination by stones. Usually done by upending a pouch of specially chosen stones over a chart and interpreting the results.

* Oneiromancy. Divination through dreams, and notably depicted in the Bible's Book of Genesis, when Joseph predicted years of plenty and famine. Depends heavily on your ability to actually remember your dreams.

* Dactyliomancy. Divination through rings — the kind you wear on your fingers. One common method is to suspend a ring on a piece of thread over a round chart of letters, and allowing the spirits to spell out a message.

* Ceromancy. Divination through shapes formed by melted wax in water. Let melted wax from a hot candle drip into cool water and then let the solid forms guide your choices.

* Oomancy. Divination through eggs. Next time you poach or fry an egg, keep your eye on the white as it cooks. It may offer clues about the future, but if not, at least you have breakfast.

* Xylomancy. Divination through pieces of wood. Look for messages from the spirits in fallen twigs, branches, or logs.

* Gyromancy. Divination through dizziness. Walk in a ring or around a circle until you (or a trusted fellow diviner) fall down from dizziness. When you hit the dirt, make a prediction about the future.

* Belomancy. Divination through pulling arrows from a container at random. Belomancy-appropriate arrows usually have messages written on them, and when drawn and assembled, will give you the answers you seek.
