Hate Mosquitoes? Book a vacation here

The only country in the world without the pesky mosquito is Iceland, and scientists are not entirely sure why. All the countries surrounding Iceland have mosquitoes.

Norway, Scotland, and Greenland have multiple mosquito species. (Of course, Antarctica is also mosquito free, but it is a continent, not a country.) The most likely explanation is Iceland’s daunting climate, according to Live Science. Long winters and frequent cycles of freezing and thawing in autumn and spring might disrupt their life cycle. Or it might be that mosquitoes just haven’t made it to Iceland over its ocean barriers, although the critter is known to travel inside airplanes and even on landing gear. Hawaii was mosquito free until 1826 when ships introduced them to the islands.
